I love this photo of my grandfather at B'Nai Jacob on Artesian in 1987. At first glance, it seems like a man praying with his peers, probably as a minyan. But then you look closely... and it so perfectly captures who my grandpa was and his relationship with Judaism. I thought about this picture out of the blue this evening. I was suddenly struck by how much I would love to talk to him again, just one last time. Generally when that mood strikes, I feel like I'd use an opportunity for another conversation to ask him about his past. This evening, I just wanted to hear him tell one of his jokes.
Man, it is hard sometimes.
