Lunch

I ate octopus salad for lunch today. And for dinner last night after I bought it at the seafood counter of the local grocery emporium. Usually, octopus salad involves teeny octopi, so I was rather surprised when the guy behind the counter began scooping 4-5 inch long octopi into my container. I almost canceled the order, but I told myself to be brave. (Had I also known that the salad is inexplicably chock full of my arch enemy herb, cilantro, I would definitely have told him to forget it.)

However, it is one thing to eat calamari or little things with tentacles. It is quite another when a long tentacle falls off the corpse and sort of waves at you.

Ew.

I'm kind of scared of octopodes. Besides not eating any animals, I don't think I could ever eat octopodes, and tentacles to boot. Ew.

I do like that you now have a category set aside for octopus though.

And yes, octopodes is the correct plural, if you take the word at it's true Latin roots. I asked a linguist once.

Anyway,
Ew.

Mmm, octopus. It's great when it's not rubbery! Which is rare.

People are so love/hate with cilantro, aren't they? I had never had it until I moved to the West Coast. I thought it tasted like soap until it broke me.

I'm anti-octopus, but that's beside the point. I've heard that the people who don't like cilantro detect some sort of metallic taste. It's like a genetic thing. Like with the quinine in tonic water -- I think it's absolutely horrifyingly bitter, and I shudder when people order gin and tonics. But apparently I have the sensitive-to-quinine gene. Isn't the human body funny?

I was so distracted with the octopode I forgot to mention that I am also very anti-cilantro.

I hate Suzanne's lunch.
